Doctors Manitoba hosted an expert workshop to dig into the role of sick notes in verifying short term absences from work, and to identify alternatives. The session included a cross section of public and private employer representatives, human resources and legal experts, labour representatives, and physicians. This workshop builds on over 18 months of engagement with employers and workers on sick notes and related issues. 

Attendees weighed in on the need for any potential exceptions if sick notes were eliminated in the province, and potential alternatives to support short term absence verification, such as self-attestations. They also advised on key resources and supports for employers and workers to support a transition away from sick notes. While there were a range of viewpoints and opinions, there was strong consensus among employer and labour representatives about limiting sick notes to improve access to medical care.
